Role Overview

The successful candidate will provide leadership for the Engineering Design Assurance team within the Design Assurance Center (DAC) organization. This Central Region 1 position supports the Communication and Navigation businesses within Mission Systems E&T.

Responsibilities include planning, organizing, resource allocation, personnel hiring and development, performance reviews, salary planning, and overall group management of the Design Assurance team. Candidate must be a self-starter, be able to multitask, manage unplanned events, and take advantage of opportunities and events to achieve results that exceed expectations. This individual must be able to communicate with employees at all levels in the organization, demonstrating excellent problem solving, critical thinking and decision making skills. Additional requirements include an understanding of systems, software, and hardware development and the associated processes. Solid understanding and experience in the engineering development life-cycle with emphasis on design quality aspects is critical for success.  

Other strategic responsibilities include leading organizational change initiatives, identifying and implementing process improvements, finding creative ways to reduce total cost of quality, and developing and maintaining internal and external relationships to enable and facilitate achievement of quality objectives. The candidate will be responsible for taking high level vision objectives and breaking them down into executable work for the team to accomplish, leveraging the use of latest technologies available to strategically positioning the department for future enhancements.

The ideal candidate will also possess the following skills or direct experience:

  • Passion for Quality, Process, and Continuous Improvement.

  • An understanding of lean value and associated savings.

  • Ability to influence others to “do the right thing, for the right reason”.

  • Strong interpersonal skills to communicate effectively at multiple levels of the organization --  Engineering Manager, Department Manager and Director levels.

  • An ability to establish rapport with all levels of the organization, including executive leadership, internal engineering customers, shared service organizations, and external customers.

  • An ability to communicate masterfully both verbally and in writing.

  • Ability to work through others -- lead, develop, mentor and support a team of Process Analysts and Engineers.

  • Ability to translate department strategies into actionable plans that support Design Assurance Center strategic plans and achieve meaningful (measurable) results that improve project quality over time.

  • Prudent decision making -- ability to provide team members with direction and priorities that enable the team members effectively contribute to the multiple projects they are assigned.

  • Strong customer focus and a proven track record of meeting commitments.

  • A strong working knowledge of design process, including the Technical Consistent Process.

  • An ability to create an environment where complacency is not tolerated and teamwork and excellence are fostered.

This management role supports a large breadth of projects and domains and requires the ability to work effectively and influentially with higher levels of leadership to accomplish the objectives of the role. Prior resource planning and cost account management experience is required for this position. Prior engineering leadership and knowledge of effective Design Quality Assurance principles are highly desired.

Basic Qualifications:

  • This position requires a Bachelor’s degree in the appropriate discipline and 5 years of relevant experience or an Advanced degree in the appropriate discipline and 3 years of relevant experience.  In the absence of a degree, 9 years of relevant experience is required.
  • US Citizenship or Permanent Resident (Green Card) and ability to obtain a DoD Security Clearance is required.
  • Cost account management and resource planning experience is required.
  • Knowledge of effective Design Quality Assurance principles is preferred. 

  • Knowledge of industry requirements such as CMMI is preferred.

  • New Product Introduction design and development life cycle experience, from DP-D thru DP-E, is preferred.

  • JIRA experience is preferred.

  • Quality experience in a leadership or support role is preferred.
